Unlocking Sustainable finance for WASH: Uganda's banking sector steps In
On 17 June 2025, Uganda's WASH sector and the Uganda Bankers' Association convened in Kampala to launch a new platform for unlocking local, sustainable financing for water, sanitation, and hygiene services. With only 19% of Ugandans accessing safely managed water and 18% accessing safely managed sanitation as of 2022, the Ministry of Water and Environment is leading efforts to close this gap by working with the financial sector. The breakfast dialogue explored how Uganda's recently launched Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Framework could underpin a dedicated Sustainable Financing Framework for WASH, bringing ESG champions, banks, and WASH stakeholders together to define practical next steps. It marks the first in a planned series of engagements aimed at making sustainable WASH financing a lasting reality ahead of the 2030 SDG 6 deadline.
